The town of San Felipe was first settled in 1670. The first settlers arrived there from another community after suffering too many disease outbreaks and a plague of bats. (Religious Tourism In The World, 2020)

Curious facts: The first Sanctuary of San Felipe de Jesus was inaugurated in 1870 but was seriously damaged by the earthquakes of 1917 and 1918. (Emilsa & Castillo, n.d.)

The image of the Buried Lord of San Felipe arrived in the village in 1670. In writings of 1748, a crucified Christ is mentioned on the main altar. In 1804, reference was already made to the image of a Buried Lord.

A contemporary writing, which can be seen on the main altar of this sanctuary, indicates that the buried Lord of San Felipe, today venerated, was formerly known as Christ of the Blessed Souls. The sculpture reproduces the rigidity of a body with knees bent from the position on the cross. (Religious Tourism In The World, 2020)
